Wrap your yarn around your hook, put through the circle wrap your yarn around your hook again and pull back through (you now have three loops on your hook), wrap your yarn around your hook and pull through the first two loops, wrap your yarn around your hook and pull through the remaining two loops (you should now have one loop left on your hook and you have completed a treble stitch) Repeat your treble twice more.

7.To complete your first round make two more treble stitches.
8. To complete your round slip stitch into the 3rd of the 5 chain you made at the beginning of the round
9. to complete your square pull the slip stitch through the 2nd loop

16. Your next three trebles are to be worked in the space indicated by the needle in the photo above.
17. Continue working 3 trebles, 2 chain, 3 trebles in each of the corner spaces and 3 trebles in each of the spaces as indicated by the needle in the photo above but on each of the other sides until you have completed the round.
18. Continue working a further two rounds.
You have now completed 5 rounds and your first basic granny square.and can finish off by cutting your yarn and pulling through your last stitch. You can of course continue to work further rounds if you want your granny square to be bigger or work into a blanket the details of which you can find here.
Finishing off
1. Using your darning needle thread the yarn through the backs of the stitches on the reverse edge of your square and fasten off.
2. To finish off the centre, thread your darning needle with tail left at the centre and thread through the back of stitches around the centre.
3. Draw the yarn so that it pulls together in the middle.
4. This will give you a nice neat finish to the centre of your square on the right side.
