Who knew the versatility of the humble shower cap!!
I don't know why I had never thought of this before
It was after the annual trip to Yarndale that the brain wave came to me in a splash of inspiration.
I stayed at the Craven Heifer Hotel ,which I highly recommend if ever you are looking for somewhere to stay near Skipton. Every day the rooms were cleaned and your refreshment tray replenished. It wasn't just the refreshments that but toiletries too and let me tell you not only did you have beautiful fluffy towels but a gorgeous fluffy dressing gown too, oh what luxury. I know most of us take our own toiletries but there is always something you may not have remembered and no matter what you used it too was replenished the next morning including a shower cap.
In these days of trying to be more environmentally friendly and reduce the use of plastic I had been putting a tea towel over the bowl to prove my bread dough but it didn't seem to be as effective as cling film, then it came to me what about a shower cap!! I still had a shower cap in its little box in my wash bag from when I was away. Now although the humble shower cap is plastic you can use it over and over again and not just over your bowl to prove your dough. I have put one over salad in the fridge to keep it fresh. Over the Yorkshire pudding mix to keep the air in the batter. You can of course buy the stretch silicone lids but actually I think I prefer the humble shower cap. May be I should write to Pru and Paul before they start filming the next series of GBBO where you see all the contestants using those enormous plastic bags when they put their bread dough in the proving draw in bread week.
