Cross stitch - hoops, Qsnap or a wooden frame.

Every kit you purchase  should contain exactly what you need to be able to complete your project, i.e a chart, the silks, a needle and clear instructions on how to get started. The only thing it will not have and you will  need in addition to a kit is a hoop, Qsnap or wooden frame.

The purpose of a  hoop, Qsnap or wooden frame is to keep the tension of your fabric tort making it easier for you to stitch.

So which is right for you?  That's a good question.

Bamboo hoops come in various sizes starting from a 3" but I confess that even though I have various sized hoops I tend to use the same two hoops sizes 8" & 12" and they have always served me well for the projects I work on and have done for the last 25 years.

Of course these days there are plastic versions of a hoop. This one is a spring tension hoop that work just as well as the traditional bamboo hoops.

Once you get on to bigger projects you can of course go the Qsnap route. I have never used one but  know of  people who do and swear by them and tell me they are very transportable if you are going on holiday and wish to take a project with you.

alternatively there are wooden frames. These are mainly used if you like tapestry but I have seen cross stitchers use a wood frame especially if they are working on a large project from the Heaven and Earth range, but by the time you  progress to one of these charts you won't be needing my advice.

Hoops are fairly cheap to buy when you are first getting started and can be purchased singularly or as a set.  The Qsnap range or a wooden frame would be more expensive in the short term but may benefit in the long term if you progress to  working on big projects with a lot of speciality stitches or beading.

In the end it will come down to personal choice and what works best for you and what you feel is most comfortable working with.
