Sterilising Jars

I am always paranoid that my jars are sterile enough. I would be mortified if I had given a gift to someone only for them to tell me that when they opened it, it had gone mouldy....

Whether you have collected jars over the preceding months or bought new they will need to be sterilised before using.

I'm sure there are many ways in which to sterilise your jars but this is mine.

If you are lucky enough to have a dishwasher I put them through for a first wash.

About 20 minutes before the chutney should be read I heat the oven to 160 fan, 180C or gas mark 3.

If the jars have been through the dishwasher but have not yet gone through the drying stage and the jars are still hot I place them on an oven proof tray and let them finish drying in the oven for around 15 minutes.

If the jars have already gone cold I rinse under the hot tap place on the tray and dry them in the oven for around 15 minutes.

If you don't have the use of a dishwasher I wash with hot soapy water and rinse with hot water place on a tray and dry off in the oven for 15 minutes.

If you are using jars which have with a rubber seal then the rubber seals  need to be boiled for 10 minutes.

Metal lids - I put my metal lids in the oven with the jars to dry but if you are using a combination of jars with rubber seals and jars with metal lids then you could boil all the seals and metal lids together.

Hope you find this useful.
